Three boys Two mums One blog

It’s been a while since I wrote a blog. Shame on me! My excuse is that we have been busy with the Christmas and New Year celebrations and time just got away with it all. However, I am now back to blogging and will provide more useful and helpful content.

Some of you may be wondering what happened to my mushroom growing efforts…

With summer here and the temperature increasing, the mushrooms weren’t growing so well anymore. No matter how much spritzing I did, they just could not beat the heat. As soon as a little button popped up from the dirt, it would shrivel up and brown and a sad fate awaited them. I even resorted to moving them from my laundry to another cooler room, but it just didn’t help them survive.

I have not let the temperature beat me and I’m determine to grow more mushrooms this year, starting at late autumn when the temperature is not so up and down.

Anyhow, the box of dirt that I used to grow the mushrooms in have been dumped and used to fill holes in the garden. I really feel that for $20, I would have bought many more mushrooms at the supermarket than growing them in the box this time.

My next project is to grow a vegetable garden. If only I didn’t have to nag my husband endlessly to build a vegetable box in the backyard….

I thought it would be a good idea to make our own Christmas cards this year. Jeremy is at an age where he can participate in my craft activities and enjoy seeing the finished product.

I bought a box of craft pieces from Big W for around $10 and a packet of blank cards and spent a good half of the afternoon letting Jeremy paste and stick cotton balls, glitter and helping me design the cards.

I hope they are a hit with the grandparents and aunties/uncles this year!

I have some exciting news! That box of dirt that I was anxiously staring at everyday finally proved that it wasn’t just a box of dirt and cute little mushrooms shot through last week.

I was fairly busy last week and didn’t get a chance to check on the mushrooms and just when I took my eyes off them, they appeared. So it’s not a dud as I mentioned in my last mushroom post. However, I had expected them to grow more evenly spread out, not in little clumps here and there.

They have been growing so quickly since the first few appeared! I have enough to make something with them now. Perhaps a beef and mushroom stew or a creamy mushroom soup?

I recently purchased a Wii Fit after much persuasion from my hubby. I had my doubts at first, thinking it was like any other computer game console. Before Jeremy, Paul was addicted to PS2 but since the introduction of the Wii, he’d been trying to persuade me that it’s a must. I finally agreed after seeing the Wii Fit advertised on TV.

We’ve had it for a couple of weeks now, and it was suprisingly easy to use for a woman does not like playing games of any type using these consoles.  I don’t exercise formally and for me, exercise includes occasionally walking Jeremy to the park, cleaning the house and doing the shopping. Fun stuff, but far from going to the gym, aerobics or laps at the pool.

The Wii Fit assesses your real age based on your weight, height and fitness level. This age should not be taken too seriously as it can be judgemental. For example, I was given a depressing ‘real age’ of 42 because during the fitness test, I got distracted and bummed out. Oh well, I’ll just have to re-assess my Wii Fit age.

It has activities such as yoga, jogging and some balance exercises such as skiing and keeping the soccer ball out of the net. You choose your fitness level, I’m still on beginner and go from there. It’s easy to navigate around even for people like me.

My personal view on the Wii Fit would be that it’s fun but the real stuff is better. For example, it’s better to go to a yoga class and experience the real thing or going skiing. But if you can’t, then Wii Fit would be the next best thing to do in the comforts of your own home, because it’s fun and can be challenging.

For those who are lazy to exercise like me, it’s the perfect way to get fit in my pjs, except that unless you spend hours on it, you wouldn’t get any fitter. With that time, you could go to the gym or pool.

We now treat it as what it really is, a game that we spend time on for entertainment, and if we get fit during the process, it’s a bonus.
